Italy sues Apple for planned iPhone obsolescence

Published

on

The Italian consumer association Altroconsumo has filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, accusing it of practicing planned obsolescence.

On behalf of the Italian consumers affected by this practice, which has already been acknowledged by the Italian authorities, the association is seeking damages in the amount of 60 million euros.

The lawsuit applies to owners of smartphones iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus. In the period from 2014 to 2020, about 1 million units of these smartphones were sold in Italy.

Apple said it has never done anything to deliberately shorten the lifespan of its products or degrade performance in order to encourage renewal.

Similar lawsuits against Apple over planned iPhone obsolescence have also been filed in Belgium, Portugal and Spain. Although the EU has technically approved a Europe-wide class action mechanism, it does not yet have the force of law.
