The Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, an independent Italian administrative body tasked with “protecting fundamental rights and freedoms and respecting dignity in the processing of personal data,” said on Friday that it had asked Facebook for clarification. relatively smart glasses recently released by the social media giant. The guarantor intends to assess whether this product complies with the provisions of Italian privacy law.

As a reminder, the Facebook smart glasses presented this week were created in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, which owns the Ray-Ban brand. They allow users to listen to music, take calls, take photos and short videos, and share them through Facebook services using a companion app.

The Italian regulator clarified that it had asked the Irish Data Protection Officer, who oversees Facebook, since the social network’s European headquarters is in Ireland, to ask Facebook for clarification. He would like information about the measures that Facebook has taken to protect people, in particular children, who may be inadvertently being photographed, about the systems that ensure the anonymity of the data collected, and about the functions of the voice assistant connected to the glasses.

Facebook has already promised to answer these questions.
