Judging by the latest news, Nokia will expand its geography beyond Earth’s orbit. Of course, their goals will not be at all in providing mobile devices for the inhabitants of outer space.
What became known
Participation is planned in the framework of scientific research. In particular, Nokia has committed itself to creating a favorable infrastructure for wireless data transmission of the LTE (4G) standard on the lunar station, which NASA promises to build in 2028.
This week in the media leaked information about the conclusion of a number of contracts NASA in the framework of the project for the exploration and development of the moon. A total of $ 370 million has been allocated to various companies. Most of this amount is donated to SpaseX and the United Launch Alliance, whose work is to improve the way rocket fuel is produced and operated in space.
In turn, the Finnish IT giant got 14.1 million. Despite the relatively small share, the importance of Nokia’s participation should not be underestimated. The fact is that the successful implementation of the planned will provide high-quality communications for astronauts working at a considerable distance from each other. Moreover, on the Moon, communication will be provided, for example, between all-terrain vehicles and control points, as well as other objects of the lunar infrastructure.
Since the lunar station under development by NASA will have many years of use, reliable communication is one of the main factors. The current technologies of data transmission in outer space do not possess high speed and reliability.
