Recently, manufacturers of top gaming laptops (Lenovo and Asus in particular) have begun using liquid metal as a thermal interface for the CPU or GPU. Some users have also begun to use liquid metal in video cards, but not all of this is for the better.

Overclocker Roman Hartung, known under the nickname der8auer, in his YouTube video blog showed what the liquid metal of the GPU and the cooling system of a conventional video card can turn into.

The GeForce RTX 2060 was sent to him by one of his subscribers complaining about the GPU getting too hot (up to 100°C) in idle mode. Roman dismantled the video card and discovered the absence of a conventional thermal interface on the GPU. Apparently, the owner decided to “upgrade” the cooling system, and replaced the thermal paste with liquid metal. But he apparently did not know that a gallium-based thermal interface can form alloys with aluminum, aluminum-zinc alloy and steel. Gallium diffuses into the cracks of aluminum and damages its structure.

With prolonged contact, gallium can penetrate deep enough into the aluminum that ordinary grinding of the damaged surface will not help. This is exactly what happened in the case described by Roman: the aluminum plate in the area of ​​its contact with the GPU had to be milled. After that, ordinary thermal paste was again applied to the GPU and thermal pads were selected for memory chips of a different thickness (it changed by removing the aluminum layer from the cooling system plate that covers both the GPU and the memory chips).

As a result, the GeForce RTX 2060 worked again as it should. And the conclusion is simple: if there is no understanding of how liquid metal works, it is better not to use standard and proven solutions – thermal paste and thermal pads.

In benchmarks, as we can see, the Ryzen 3 7320U processor shows itself approximately at the level of the Core i5-1130G / 1135G7, but the graphics core loses to all test participants, and noticeably. For games, such a laptop can only be used if these same games are very undemanding and / or old.

At the same time, the author of the article noted that in everyday tasks in Chrome, GIMP, Irfanview and LibreOffice, the new Acer behaves very well, and there is no particular difference with much more expensive laptops.

As for autonomy, it is at an average level. In particular, watching YouTube at 60% screen brightness completely drained the laptop in seven hours.

At the same time, this Aspire 3 model offers Wi-Fi 6, USB-C 3.2, Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1, USB-C charging and an 18.8 mm thick case with a weight of 1.78 kg.

It is worth noting that laptops with Ryzen 3 7320U and other Mendocino APUs play in the same price segment, where there will be models on the new Intel Processor CPUs that have replaced Celeron and Pentium.
