IPhone 11 and 11 Pro Extreme Test: 8 Months Underwater

by Henry Brown

Resource CNET has published the final results of its extreme water resistance test on last year’s Apple smartphones – iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.

CNET teamed up with Sofar Ocean Technologies to dive the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro attached to a Trident underwater drone. Daring explorers have sent Trident with iPhone 11 and 11 Pro to Monterey Bay to see what happens to smartphones.

The first stage (depth of 4 meters for 30 minutes), the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro passed with ease, despite the fact that Apple promises a safe dive for the iPhone 11 only 2 meters. After the smartphones were wiped with a cloth, their screens worked, there were no signs of moisture in the cameras, buttons and speakers worked. A slight drop in quality was observed with sound reproduction.

In the second phase, the smartphones were submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of 8 meters – 4 times the depth for the iPhone 11 and twice for the 11 Pro compared to Apple’s declared “safe”. This stage also passed without problems – after external drying, screens, speakers and cameras worked.

At the third stage, we dived to 12 meters. While the smartphones were underwater, the iPhone 11 Pro screen suddenly switched from the stopwatch to another tab in the Clock app. At first glance, after drying, the smartphones retained their functionality, only the sound became muffled.

All of these tests were done in October 2019. Then why are we writing about this? After that the fun began. Experimenters at CNET decided to go further and immersed the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro in water for 8 months. Now the tests are over and, surprisingly, the smartphones continue to work fine.

Recall that the company promises the following regarding the protection of the iPhone 11:

iPhone 11 is even better protected from water: it can withstand immersion to a depth of 2 meters for up to 30 minutes – twice as deep as the iPhone XR. “

The iPhone 11 Pro claims:

Protection against water when immersed to a depth of 4 meters for 30 minutes. “
