Intel ordered to pay $ 2.18 billion for infringement of two patents

A federal jury in a Texas court ruled that Intel had infringed two patents held by the VLSI Fortress Investment Group and must pay $ 2.18 billion in damages.

Damage for infringement of one patent is estimated at $ 1.5 billion. The rest of the amount goes to another patent.

The patents refer to designs that VLSI claims Intel has used in some processors. More precisely, one is related to clock frequency control, and the other is related to memory operation at minimum supply voltage.

The first in 2012 was received by Freescale Semiconductor, the second – in 2010 by SigmaTel. Later, Freescale bought SigmaTel, and with the 2015 NXP acquisition of Freescale, the latter passed on patents. Subsequently, they were transferred to VLSI Technology, which was revived in 2019 specifically for the litigation with Intel.

The current victory is just one episode of a massive legal battle that spans eight patents and several states. In the same Texas court, additional lawsuits are still planned.

Intel and Apple have previously filed an antitrust lawsuit against VLSI, accusing it of seeking billions of dollars in compensation in various patent claims.

Intel also challenged VLSI patents with the US Patent Office of Appeals.

Insiders have repeatedly noted that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in terms of design is not much different from the current generation model. They don’t expect a revolution in terms of technical parameters either – the main innovation will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, but the camera sensors, apparently, will remain 12-megapixel. However, it is expected that the battery capacity will increase to 3700 mAh.

Roland Quandt is a well-known informant. Previously, he completely declassified the GoPro 9 Black and GoPro 10 Black action cameras before their announcement, and also named their exact cost.
