Intel has finally decided to extend support for the Application Optimization (APO) feature to older processors.

The company initially said that APO was created specifically for the Raptor Lake Refresh CPU, but now it has said that some processors from the Alder Lake (12th generation Core) and Raptor Lake (13th generation Core) lines will also receive it. True, supposedly each specific CPU model must be configured manually for support, so, firstly, it will take time, and secondly, not all processors from previous lines will receive APO support. These will mainly be older models with an unlocked multiplier. In addition, APO will also support the new generation of mobile Core HX.

Intel also said that many new games will also receive APO support. Let us remind you that at the moment there are only two of them: Rainbow Six Siege and Metro Exodus. The list has been expanded to include 14 more games, including Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, F1 22, Strange Brigade, World War Z, Dirt 5 and World of Warcraft.

As a reminder, APO is an evolution of Thread Director technology, which optimizes workloads based on the specific software being used and the underlying architecture best suited for the task. The essence of APO’s work is quite simple: a certain game (for now we are only talking about games) is added by Intel to the list of supported ones, and APO adjusts the work of the Thread Director, making the processor more efficient in a specific game. As tests of the first two games have shown, the increase can be huge: 20-30%.

The game Alan Wake 2 is one of the most demanding at the moment and the first that conditionally does not work at all on older video cards, and the point is not at all in ray tracing. However, the developers from Remedy have prepared a patch that greatly improves performance on older video cards.

The preliminary version of the patch has already been tested by Digital Foundry specialists. Judging by their review, the patch improves performance only on video cards of the GeForce GTX 10 line, but this is very good news, because, judging by Steam statistics, there are still a lot of owners of such video cards.

The authors tested the game in Full HD with settings roughly equivalent to those of the PlayStation 5, including active FSR 2 technology in Quality mode. As you can see, the patch greatly improves performance. GTX 10 cards began to work faster by anywhere from 50% and up to 100-200%, depending on the location. As a result, even the GTX 1060 produces a little more than 25 fps, however, in the forest, where the load is lower than, for example, in the city. The GTX 1080 Ti, in turn, allows you to get the almost coveted 60 fps.

True, testing was carried out with top AMD and Intel processors, and GTX 10 owners clearly mostly use much less powerful solutions, so it is unclear how playable Alan Wake 2 will be after the patch on the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 in the case of some conditional Core i5-7500.

In any case, given that the mesh shaders were the root cause of the performance problem on older cards, it’s surprising that Remedy was able to somehow fix the issue at all.

It remains to add that the same patch will become available to everyone on March 6th.
