The Unconventional Computing Lab at the University of the West of England presented a very original solution – a motherboard that uses mushroom cultures as elements of a computing system.

More precisely, the mycelium is used – the vegetative body of fungi. Studies have shown that mushrooms can communicate with each other using electrical signals through the mycelium, meaning it can be used as a conductor. This is similar to how neurons in the brain “communicate”. In addition, the mycelium can remember data, which is similar to the principle by which the brain forms habits.

Of course, such systems cannot compete with conventional computers in terms of performance, but among their advantages we note increased fault tolerance, low energy consumption, as well as the possibility of growth and development.

“Right now, this is just a feasibility study. We are simply demonstrating that with the help of mycelium it is possible to carry out calculations, implement basic logic circuits and basic electronic circuits. In the future, we will be able to grow better computers and control devices on mycelium, ”said Andrew Adamatzky, head of the laboratory.

According to scientists, this principle can lead to the creation of new neuromorphic computing systems.

In the base there is an Intrel Core i5-13500H processor and a dGPU Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop, and in the top version there is a Core i7-13700H and GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop. The amount of DDR5 RAM is 16 GB (two slots, so the amount of RAM can be increased), SSD – 1 TB.

Also in the configuration are Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet 2.5 Gigabit adapters, a 140 W charger connected to the USB-C port, and an 80 Wh battery. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but this model shouldn’t be much more expensive than the GeekPro G5000.

Also today, Lenovo introduced the Lenovo Legion Y900 tablet (with 3K screen and 12,300 mAh battery) and its most powerful gaming laptop, the Legion Y9000P Extreme Edition.

Is it time to finally retire video cards with 2 3

Video cards with a small amount of memory can sometimes still perform well in modern games, if we are talking about the flagship solutions of yesteryear. However, now there is at least one game where accelerators with less than 4 GB of memory simply will not work. This is Halo Infinite.

Is it time to finally retire video cards with 2-3 GB of memory? Halo Infinite no longer runs on these adapters

A fresh patch for this game now simply does not allow you to run it on a PC with video cards that have less than 4 GB of memory. At the same time, such changes are not mentioned in the description of the patch.

It can be noted that the requirement in the form of at least 4 GB of memory has always been in the game, but usually such requirements are conditional. In particular, Halo Infinite ran on inappropriate 3D maps prior to the patch. For example, there are a lot of videos on the Web where the game is tested, including on a GeForce GTX 1050 with 2 GB of memory, which is quite enough to play even in Full HD with minimal graphics quality settings. But there is a much more powerful GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, which feels quite tolerable even in more demanding games.

There is a possibility that the restriction is just a mistake and will be removed soon. But not at all a fact.
