In Canada, they developed neural networks to search for alien signals – they found possible “technosignatures”
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program has been around for decades, but recently wireless technology has made the search more difficult. And so they decided to connect neural networks to the case.
Specialists trained them on a variety of signals so that neural networks could analyze signals from space and look for anomalies. This was implemented as part of a project led by Peter Ma, a third-year student in the Physics and Mathematics Department at the University of Toronto. Observation data from 820 stars were used as training material – about 115 million fragments in total.
The neural network itself used the TensorFlow machine learning library and the Python Keras libraries. The analysis revealed 8 previously undetected signals that were not recorded during previous studies. Scientists believe that the use of neural networks can improve the recognition of extraterrestrial signals, although so far they have not commented on the detected data.
“SETI aims to find evidence of intelligent life in space using “technosignatures” created by technology scientists. The discovery of an unambiguous technosignature will demonstrate the existence of an extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), so it is of great interest to both scientists and the general public.‘, the researchers said.
Note that neural networks are also used in other branches of science, as well as for generating texts, images and other content.

SpaceX will deliberately destroy some of its latest Stalink V2 Mini satellites launched into orbit in February

At the end of February, SpaceX launched 21 Starlink V2 Mini satellites into space – the new generation vehicles are smaller than their predecessors and, thanks to new data transmission technologies and improved antennas, provide significantly more bandwidth – 4 times more than the first generation Starlink. However, as it turned out, not everything is going smoothly with them: a short time after the launch, independent observers noted the unusual behavior of a number of these satellites – they moved along a strange trajectory.
Jonathan McDowell, a well-known astronomer and creator of the planet4589.org website, which collects all the statistics on Starlink satellites, spoke on this topic. “I think the height changes are significant. I think they are solving some problem with the new satellites and in a few weeks we will see if they resume the ascent into orbit“, he wrote on Twitter. Elon Musk answered him:There are a lot of new technologies in Starlink V2, so as expected, we had some issues. Some satellites will be de-orbited, others will be thoroughly tested before they rise to a height above the space station.“.
It turns out that for some of those 21 satellites there is no longer any salvation, SpaceX will destroy them by re-entering the earth’s atmosphere.

Microsoft bans companies from training AI bots using Bing without permission

Microsoft developers are ready to restrict access to Bing search results for some companies that have used it to train AI bots without the permission of the corporation. They said that if the search is used in this capacity, access will be blocked.
The company believes that using search to train chatbots violates the agreement and reserves the right to terminate unilaterally. There have been no legal comments on this topic yet, but Microsoft itself has stated that there is communication with partners.
Currently, Bing search results can be used by DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and You.com search engines. In doing so, the first system combines data from Bing and its own algorithms. And You.com and Neeva use the Microsoft system to save resources. Considering that most chatbots are trained on data from Bing or Google search, such a decision can negatively affect the speed of AI development.
Note that earlier the ChatGPT and Bing neural networks learned to spread gossip.
