SK Hynix has introduced what it calls a revolutionary solution.

Hynix made graphics memory do the calculations. The company introduced the revolutionary PIM technology

The development is called PIM (Processing In Memory). It is a next-generation technology that provides a solution to data overload problems for AI and big data by adding computational functionality to semiconductor memory. Simply put, some calculations are made directly in the memory chips. This, firstly, offloads the CPU or GPU, and secondly, it can significantly speed up some types of calculations.

As the first product to use PIM technology, Hynix developed the GDDR6-AiM sample. GDDR6-AiM adds computing functionality to GDDR6 memory chips that process data at 16Gbps. Combining GDDR6-AiM with a CPU or GPU instead of conventional DRAM increases the speed of certain computations by up to 16 times. GDDR6-AiM is expected to be used for machine learning, high performance computing, big data processing and storage. That is, in consumer products, apparently, such a technology is not worth waiting for yet. GDDR6-AiM operates at 1.25V, which is lower than the operating voltage of conventional GDDR6 memory (1.35V). In addition, PIM reduces data transfer to the CPU and GPU, reducing power consumption by 80%.

The company also plans to unveil a technology that integrates GDDR6-AiM with AI chips in collaboration with SAPEON, an AI chip company that recently spun off from SK Telecom.

Android apps on Windows 11 become available in five more

Microsoft is expanding the geographic reach of its Android app testing program on Windows 11 PCs.

Android apps on Windows 11 become available in five more regions

Back in October 2021, Android apps for Windows 11 finally became available to members of the Windows Insiders Testing Program. Then, after months of testing, they became available as a public preview and in a stable version of the OS, but only for users in the US. Microsoft today announced that it is expanding this program to more countries.

Chinese rover goes dormant on Mars

China’s Zhurong rover went into hibernation during a harsh winter on Mars due to cold, sand and dust storms.

Chinese rover goes dormant on Mars

The rover is solar-powered and has gone into sleep mode since May 18. Temperatures on the Red Planet, meanwhile, are around -20°C during the day and -100°C at night, according to the China Lunar Exploration Program.

China’s Tianwen-1 orbiter, which brought Zhurong to Mars last May, has also observed sand and dust storm activity over the rocker’s landing pad in Utopia Plain.

The design of the rover has several features to help withstand winter temperatures, sand and dust storms. These measures include the ability to tilt the solar panels to maximize the collection of sunlight and a special dust-proof coating on the panels.

The Chinese rover is not alone in its plight: Nasa’s InSight lander, which arrived on the Red Planet in November 2018, is also struggling to produce enough solar power to keep going. At the same time, the Nasa Curiosity and Perseverance rovers can continue their journey on the surface of Mars regardless of the time of year, since they use radioisotope thermoelectric generators.

The rover is expected to resume operations again in December, with the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere and the end of dust storms.

VTB online bank launched bill payment using QR codes

Thus, now users will be able to pay for services using a QR code without using the bank’s mobile application. The functionality is available on iOS smartphones through the Safari browser (starting from version 11), and Android smartphones through the Chrome browser (from version 57 and newer). Later, the service will start working on tablets, laptops and desktop PCs.

To pay using a QR code, the user needs to go to VTB Online through a mobile browser and select the appropriate icon in the interface, after which the device’s camera is activated to read the code. The system itself recognizes all the necessary information for payment and automatically fills in the payment order, which the client will need to check and confirm the transfer of funds to the recipient.
