Audi still hasn’t released a full-size luxury SUV, although Mercedes has been selling the GL/GLS since 2006 and the BMW X7 has been in production since 2018.

But that’s about to change as Audi Australia CEO Geoff Mannering told CarSales that the flagship SUV could arrive by 2026 after long-running rumors about the Audi Q9.

When asked if there was any point in introducing a larger, more expensive Q model, he replied: “Yes, of course. If you just look at sales volume compared to different brands, we are not present in some segments that others are. Let’s see what happens in other segments in the next 24 months.” When asked to name the model, Jeff Mannering smiled and agreed that “Q9” was a catchy name.

Automotive News believes it reports that U.S. dealers could begin selling the new model as early as 2025. A report published in 2022 claimed that the Q9 would be a true seven-seat SUV with ample legroom for third-row passengers. The main markets are expected to be the USA and China.

Dealers in North America were informed of the model’s arrival over a year ago. The Q9 will be one of the last new Audi models to feature internal combustion engines. The long-term goal is to end production of internal combustion engines by 2032, with possible expansion in China depending on local demand.
