Huawei is ditching 5G modems in its smartphones. Following the Mate 40 Pro and Mate X2, the LTE version also appeared in the nova 8 Pro

Only yesterday we wrote that versions without a built-in 5G modem appeared on Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Mate X2 smartphones, and today a new version of nova 8 Pro was discovered on the company’s official website – on the same single-chip Kirin 985, but only with an LTE modem. The novelty is named logically – nova 8 Pro 4G, and apart from the modem it is no different from the usual nova 8 Pro.

One might think that Huawei is only releasing more affordable versions of its smartphones in order to spur interest among customers who do not need support for fifth generation networks, but these are no longer isolated cases, but a whole downgrade system. In fact, five models of Huawei smartphones are already presented in versions without 5G – these are Mate 40 Pro 4G, Mate X2 4G, Mate 40E 4G, P40 4G and now nova 8 Pro. Why in its range to keep so many 4G models, despite the fact that the company had previously declared its full commitment to fifth-generation networks is unclear. In addition, what is the current flagship without 5G support, and even in China – a country ahead of all others in the development of fifth-generation networks?

It is possible that the company is abandoning 5G in its smartphones for a reason, but because of the limited number of chips at its disposal: single-chip systems and 5G modems in the event that they are not an embedded component of the SoC. Due to US sanctions, Huawei cannot order the production of new single-chip systems – it has to do with what is still in stock.
