Huawei is credited with the intention to produce electric vehicles under its own brand
The Chinese company Huawei Technologies plans to produce electric vehicles under its own brand and may release the first models this year. This was reported by Reuters, citing four sources who wished to remain anonymous. These plans are regarded as a possible change in the strategic direction of the world’s largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, which has suffered from US sanctions.
Two whistleblowers said Huawei is in talks with state-owned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their car factories to build Huawei’s electric vehicles.
According to other reports, Huawei is also in talks with the state-backed BluePark New Energy Technology BAIC Group to manufacture its electric vehicles.
After nearly two years under US sanctions that restricted access to key supply chains and forced the sale of a portion of its smartphone business, Huawei sees EV production as a new strategic direction.
While Huawei officials deny that the company plans to design electric vehicles or manufacture them under its own brand, according to three sources, relevant developments are underway, and the project will be officially announced later this year. According to preliminary information, Huawei electric vehicles will be aimed at the mass segment.
