Hope for Huawei? Chinese contract manufacturer SMIC to start producing 7nm SoCs to bypass US sanctions

Huawei has lost its Kirin single-chip systems due to US sanctions, which prohibit their production on equipment with American technologies. The company has so few Kirin SoCs left in stock that the release of the Huawei P50 is questionable. And if this model comes out, then in a very limited number. Meanwhile, Huawei has a ray of hope. And his name is SMIC.

It is a local contract manufacturer for SoCs. For obvious reasons, Huawei cannot work with TSMC or Samsung, but SMIC would be glad to receive an extended contract for the production of Huawei SoCs: the company is already producing Kirin 710A using a 14-nanometer process technology, but with the development of 7-nanometer standards, the cooperation of the two companies will be released to a new level. And here the most important thing is that SMIC will use the old DUV technology (Deep Ultraviolet Lithography) for the production of 7-nanometer SoCs, and not the modern “sanctioned” EUV.

Samsung and TSMC used DUV to produce 7nm single-chip systems four years ago, and now the technology has become available to the largest Chinese manufacturer. SMIC will reportedly begin trial production of 7nm SoCs this month, with mass production launching in October. Of course, such single-chip systems are not very suitable for top-level smartphones, but they will do quite well for mid-range models.
