Head of Tesla Autopilot Software Division Unaware of Fundamental Autonomous Driving Concepts
The other day it became known that Tesla at one time actually lied in its advertisement for the FSD autopilot, creating a video where the car allegedly drove around the city thanks to the autopilot, and in fact the route was clearly registered in the system. Now, new details have surfaced related to Tesla and this story, but from the other side.
Recall that information about false advertising appeared thanks to the testimony of Ashok Elluswamy, head of the Tesla autopilot software division, which he gave as part of an investigation into a fatal accident involving Tesla, which occurred in 2018. It turned out that, as part of the same process, Elluswami made other very unusual comments.
For example, Elluswami admitted that he did not know what an Operational Design Domain (ODD) was. An ODD is a description of a particular area or areas in which an automated system will work as expected. This includes metrics such as road types, speed ranges, weather, time of day, and environmental conditions. Of course, Tesla in theory could use some of its own terms for this area, but Elluswami’s high position should oblige him to know the fundamental concepts of this industry.
In addition, Elluswami stated that he had never studied the issue of reaction time (perception-reaction), although it is also a basic parameter for self-driving systems, describing the time period that it takes for people to perceive and then respond to a certain stimulus.
It is hardly worth drawing any far-reaching conclusions about Elluswami’s competence regarding his position, but still, at the very least, these statements of his look strange.

Mercedes-Benz beat Tesla on its own field. The company was the first in the United States to obtain a license for a third-level autopilot

While Tesla has been actively promoting its autopilot, which has nothing to do with full-fledged autopilot, for many years, Mercedes-Benz became the first automobile company in the United States to obtain a license for a level 3 autopilot.
Mercedes-Benz in their cars relies on driver assistance systems under the general name Drive Pilot. This is a collection of cameras, GPS data, lidars and other sensors that allow the car to move to some extent without the participation of the driver. Such a system is now available in the S-Class and EQS.
The autopilot of the third level, we recall, implies the ability for the driver to completely release the steering wheel and go about their business, but at the same time, a person must still be ready to take control at any time.
Technologically, many companies have already stated that they are ready to release the corresponding cars, but there is a problem with the legislation in most countries, since the necessary norms are often not yet spelled out there. In particular, the important question of who will be held responsible in the event of an accident remains open.
