Greenpeace Says Chinese Internet Giants Should Move to “Clean Energy Sources”

Published

Electricity consumption by China’s data centers and 5G base stations could nearly quadruple between 2020 and 2035, which should spur these companies to pursue clean energy sources. This was announced at the end of last week by the environmental group Greenpeace.

The total electricity consumption by data centers and 5G base stations in 2020 exceeded 200 billion kWh, of which more than 60% were from coal-fired power plants.

Greenpeace estimates that this figure will grow to 782 billion kWh by 2035, making this sector one of the fastest growing sources of global warming carbon dioxide emissions. Internet giants are among the largest consumers of electricity in China.

China has pledged that it will pass the peak of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with many industrial sectors reaching a plateau or starting to reduce emissions by 2025. Nevertheless, emissions from the Internet sector could continue to grow and reach 310 million tons per year by 2035, according to Greenpeace.
