Google VP confirmed Project Soli micro-radar and Motion Sense system will return in the future

The Pixel 5, presented yesterday, in many ways falls short of the flagship of the previous generation Pixel 4 – for the sake of reducing the price (the new product is $ 100 cheaper), Google, among the rest, sacrificed the motion sense touchless gesture control function.

The Soli system (developed by the ATAP division) and the Motion Sense touchless gesture control based on it (thanks to it the phone understands hand waves and sees the owner’s approach) were one of the key features of the Pixel 4. Development is the fruit of many years of work of the company. Prior to the Pixel smartphones, the technology found its way into LG smartwatches as well as smart clothes: the first and second generations of the Jackard smart jacket, co-launched with Leviʼs.

In the comments of The Verge ViceRick Osterloh, president and head of Google’s hardware business, said that Project Soli’s micro-radar and gestures in the future will return in new products. He confirmed that the decision not to use the technology in the Pixel 5 is purely price factor.

Unfortunately, the head of the hardware business did not specify exactly when to expect the return of Project Soli and Motion Sense in serial products, and what kind of devices they will be. Not so long ago, a device with such a radar was discovered in the FCC database (the chip uses a 60 GHz mmWave frequency band) – it is assumed that this could be a new Nest thermostat.
