Google is following the path of Apple. The company will remove almost 900,000 “abandoned” applications from Google Play
At the end of April, Apple launched the “update the app or it will be removed from the App Store” initiative, and now Google is planning to do the same with its Google Play app catalog. However, if Apple took on a pencil about 650,000 applications, then Google can remove 869,000 applications from its marketplace.
The main criterion is the lack of application updates over the past two years. The main reason why both companies have declared war on applications that have not been updated for a long time is for security reasons. Legacy apps don’t keep up with the latest Android and iOS updates, and they don’t take into account new APIs and development methods that provide better security. Therefore, it is believed that applications that have not been updated for a long time are not at all as safe as fresh ones.
It should be noted that Google will not remove applications from Google Play – they will only be hidden until the developers release an update.
