Google begins “field testing” of its new AR glasses
Google has announced the start of testing its new augmented reality glasses (Augmented Reality, AR) in the field. This was reported in the official blog of the company. Starting next month, prototypes of Google’s new AR glasses will be tested on the streets and in public places. Prior to this, the device was tested in laboratories, however, the operation of some of its functions is difficult to evaluate in such limited conditions, the developers say. For example, augmented reality navigation needs to take into account factors that cannot be fully recreated indoors: weather or traffic at busy intersections.
First, “field tests” will be held on a limited scale. Prototype AR glasses will only be worn by select testers – a few dozen of Google’s most trusted employees. The devices are equipped with a display, microphone and camera built into the lenses, but have strict functional limitations. For example, the prototypes do not support photo or video capture, although camera images can be used for functions such as text translation or direction guidance. The use of devices is prohibited in schools and playgrounds, in government, medical and religious institutions. Also, they will not be tested while driving or playing sports.
During testing of its new augmented reality glasses, Google will pay special attention to ensuring the privacy of testers and others. For example, if the device still records video that is needed for analysis and debugging, then an LED indicator will light up on it to inform others. They can ask the tester to remove the images and it will be done. The data that will be saved is cleared of sensitive content, including faces and license plates. They are then stored in a secure server with limited access and deleted after 30 days. Google hasn’t said exactly where in the US it will actually test its new AR glasses.
