Goodbye 2G. Second generation communication services will finally stop in Korea this summer

Large South Korean operator LG Uplus announced the imminent termination of the provision of second generation 2G cellular services. This will happen at the end of June.

After that, 2G communication will become completely unavailable in Korea. In July last year, Korea’s largest operator, SK Telecom, gave up 2G. And in 2012, it stopped providing 2G and their competitor – KT Corp. The 2G network appeared in South Korea back in 1996.

As LG Uplus noted, the 2G network has lost popularity in recent years amid the launch of new networks, including 5G cellular communications. At the end of November 2020, the operator’s 2G network was still used by 374 thousand subscribers. This is only 2.5% of the total subscriber base of LG Uplus, numbering 14.8 million. With the closure of the 2G network, the operator plans to focus on developing 5G services, which are already used by 2.5 million subscribers.
