Global wearable device market grew 34.4% last quarter



Interest in wearable devices remained strong in the first quarter of 2021, even as sales volumes declined from a record high in the fourth quarter of 2020. According to the estimates of the analytical company IDC, a total of 104.6 million devices were shipped in three months from the beginning of the year. This is 34.4% more than in the first quarter of 2020, equal to 77.8 million units. For the first time, analysts note that shipments in the first quarter exceeded 100 million units, with most of the growth coming from relatively small companies focused on certain niches. As an example, they cite the Indian company BoAt, which focused on promoting in the local market and was able to increase sales by 326.8%. Another example is Oura, whose physical activity tracking ring has caught the attention of major sports teams and consumers. In total, all companies that are not in the top five have increased their supplies by 55%, which exceeds the growth of the market as a whole.

Apple remained the market leader, with its share declining from 32.3% to 28.8% over the year. Samsung is in second place. The share of the South Korean company remained almost unchanged for the year – at the end of the quarter it was equal to 11.3%, whereas a year ago Samsung held 11.2% of the market. This is followed by Xiaomi, whose share has significantly decreased – from 13.3% to 9.7%. The top five also include Huawei and the already mentioned BoAt company. They own 8.2% and 2.9%, respectively.
