Taiwanese electronics maker Foxconn’s factory in Zhengzhou, central China’s Henan province, is in need of 10,000 new employees after some workers left the plant due to a major coronavirus outbreak. This was reported by the Global Times newspaper, citing sources from the recruitment department.

Global Times: China's biggest iPhone assembly plant needs 10,000 workers

One of the recruiting managers told the publication that the Zhengzhou manufacturing complex – the world’s largest iPhone factory – urgently needs additional workers to restore production. To do this, the plant introduces increased salaries for hourly workers (about $4 per hour), as well as one-time bonuses for former employees who are going to return to their jobs (about $70). At the same time, strict preventive measures will be in place at the plant.

Earlier, Chinese social media reported that 20,000 Foxconn employees in Zhengzhou had contracted COVID-19. On October 26, the company denied these data, calling them rumors. The manufacturer also assured that the plants are operating normally. However, later, the propaganda department of the city committee of the Communist Party of China confirmed the information about the outbreak of COVID-19 at the Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou. On November 2, a seven-day lockdown was announced at the plant amid an outbreak of coronavirus infection.

On the same day, Taiwan’s Jingji Daily reported that Foxconn had sent some of its employees home. According to her, some of the personnel expressed a desire to leave the production, which has been operating in the “bubble” mode for several weeks – a closed loop system, when workers are not allowed out of the plant and dormitories to prevent infection with COVID-19. The exact number of employees who left the plant was not reported.

Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant accounts for about half of the world’s iPhone production.

It would seem that it is almost impossible to change such a thing as a keyboard in any original way. However, the user under the nickname Squidgeefish succeeded. He added a real disk from an old wired telephone to a regular keyboard and made it all work.

Enthusiast replaced the numeric keypad with a disk from an old phone

The disk is placed on the right and performs the functions of a digital block – only numbers need to be entered by turning the dialer. And here a problem arises – such a system is analog, and any modern keyboard is digital. The enthusiast was able to connect the drive from the phone using the DFRobot Beetle Board based on the ATmega32U4 chip. This board is able to work with analog signals and at the same time supports a standard USB port.

I also had to experiment with the keyboard itself, because I had to cut the printed circuit board. And for aesthetics, the enthusiast added 3D-printed makers. The result is a rather strange and quirky, but fully functional keyboard. According to the source, the cost of the project was no more than $30.

At the same time, using the disk, you can enter not only numbers, but also special characters, such as the percent sign, brackets, and so on. And instead of the standard digital buttons, the enthusiast put a stub.

The market leaders were Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, but the current quarter will temporarily change the balance of power. According to analysts, Apple will increase its share from 17.6% to 24.6%, overtaking Samsung, which will occupy 20.2% against the current 22.2%. This is not the first time that Apple has become a market leader in the fourth quarter, which is explained by the release of a new generation of iPhone.

At the same time, it can be seen that the source predicts a decrease in market share for all leaders, except for Apple. It is worth noting that in this case, the source considers the sales of Oppo as sales including Realme, which is not typical. It also counts OnePlus sales, but that’s normal after a merger.
