The German Antitrust Authority has launched an investigation to determine whether Google Germany, Google Ireland and their parent company Alphabet are using their market dominance in the processing of user data.
The Antitrust Authority said the investigation will consider whether the tech giant is offering users enough choice in how it uses their data.
According to Google, people use the company’s services because they are helpful, not because they have to do it or because they cannot find any alternatives.
“We give people simple control over how their information is used and restrict the use of personal information,” a company spokesman said, adding that Google will help antitrust investigators investigate them.
The agency has launched an investigation, taking advantage of the expanded powers that have been granted to it under the recent reforms of German competition law. Similar data processing investigations have also been launched against Facebook and Amazon.
“Google’s business model is largely based on processing user data,” said agency head Andreas Mundt in a statement. – We will very carefully consider the conditions under which user data is processed. The main question is whether consumers have enough choice about how Google uses their data if they want to use Google’s services. ”
