DJI has announced that its Mavic 3 drone has become the first civilian UAV to fly around the peak of Everest, capturing spectacular footage in the process.

The idea to fly a drone over the world’s highest mountain came from a team at the Chinese photography website and photography organization 8KRAW, who took the Mavic 3 to a height of 8,849 meters.

According to the Mavic 3’s official specifications, it can fly up to 6,000 meters above sea level. In addition, the Mavic 3 is designed to operate in temperatures as low as -10°C. (14°F), however temperatures drop much lower at the summit of Everest. In addition, the maximum wind resistance of the drone is 12 m / s, but on Everest the wind is much stronger.

DJI said the quadcopter needed to be tuned to withstand the rigors of Mount Everest, but did not elaborate on what was done. The modified Mavic 3 ended up climbing 9,232 meters (30,289 feet) when launched from the summit, and the footage was edited into a three-minute video released by DJI.

According to DJI, they “developed a detailed flight plan that would allow their videographers to perform an unprecedented flight from the summit, capturing the stunning beauty of the mountain and the surrounding views.”

Last week, the Department of Defense added DJI to a blacklist of Chinese companies that do business with the Chinese military, removing the company’s right to enter into contracts with the Department of Defense. The US Department of Commerce has also sanctioned DJI, banning US citizens from investing in the company at the end of 2021.
