Fingerprint payments added to Mercedes cars

Published

Starting this month, Mercedes is offering its customers in Germany a new in-car payment method. Thanks to the new Mercedes pay+ digital service, customers can make payments using the fingerprint scanner in their car. This two-factor biometric authentication system replaces the use of a PIN or smartphone for payments.

This innovative system is made possible by the integration of Visa Delegated Authentication and Cloud Token Framework technologies, which provide an additional layer of security to protect payment data.

Mercedes is the first car manufacturer in the world to implement these technologies to enable in-vehicle payments. EQS, EQE, S-Class, C-Class and GLC will be the first to offer this feature to their owners.

Customers can use in-vehicle in-car payments to pay for digital services. Through the MBUX system, they can activate and subscribe to these digital services, as well as authorize the transaction with their fingerprint. Services available include connectivity apps that control vehicle comfort features, software updates, advanced navigation services, and more.

In addition, pre-installed hardware components can be easily unlocked with your fingerprint in the Mercedes me Store upon request. This means that vehicle owners can further customize their vehicles after purchase.

The system will also be extended to other services, such as refueling. Currently, Mercedes drivers in Germany and other countries can already pay for refueling directly from the car via the Mercedes me app or via the MBUX infotainment system using a PIN code.

The 10 speed automatic transmission turned out to be not so

Toyota has announced a large recall in the United States: the campaign covers 280,000 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid SUVs, 2023-2024 Sequoia and 2022-2024 Lexus LX 600 SUVs. The problem is with the Aisin AW 10-speed automatic transmission: due to a defect, torque can be transmitted to the wheels if the selector is in position N (neutral). That is, the gear does not turn off immediately after moving the lever to position N.

Toyota said that in cases where this occurs, “the vehicle may unintentionally move forward at low speeds.” However, the company notes that this only happens when the car is “on a level surface and the brakes are not applied.” However, there is a risk of an accident or collision with a person, so a recall has been announced, as part of which the gearbox software will be updated.
