Facebook Reality Labs is the new name for Oculus

Facebook canceled its F8 conference, like all other offline events until 2021 due to the pandemic. But there will be online presentations. And on September 16th we will see the annual AR / VR conference. It is logical that such an event will take place online, isn’t it?

However, it is worth noting that it will not be called Oculus Connect as it used to be, but from 2020 it will be called Facebook Connect.

In a blog post, the company explained that Connect is not only an event about Oculus, but also about Spark AR and Facebook Horizon. So for a broader agenda, they renamed the event, while making it free and open to everyone!

But against this background, other news appeared. The fact is that Oculus no longer exists, now the VR division will be called Facebook Reality Labs or FRL for short. Previously, FRL Research was named OCulus Research, a research unit led by Michael Abrash.

The company said they want to unify brands and name their AR / VR technologies.

In this case, the name of the VR-helmet will remain the same. But there is also a nuance here, the fact is that all new Oculus users will be required to log in through Facebook to play and work in it. Moreover, after a year, this practice will spread to all Oculus users, even those who have been using VR headsets for a long time.
