European station discovers ‘creepy eye’ that looks back at it from Mars
The European Space Agency (ESA) has published an interesting photo of the surface of Mars, taken with the help of the automatic interplanetary station Mars Express.
The photo was taken on April 25, 2022 and shows a giant unnamed crater 30 km wide. Its shape resembles a spooky eye, especially if the photo is converted to a color-coded topographic image.
The ESA note jokes: “Mars sleeps with one eye open.” The message also elaborates artistically:
The unnamed 30 km wide crater in the center of the image is located among the winding channels. Creating images of veins that seem to run through the human eyeball, these channels probably carried water across the surface of Mars about 3.5 to 4 billion years ago.
The crater is located in Aonia Terra, an upland in the southern highlands of Mars. The photo shows the crater as it would be seen by the human eye with a resolution of approximately 14 meters per pixel.
