Daring Attack: Hackers Hacked Kia Servers and Demand Huge Ransom

According to sources, the servers of Kia Motors America were subjected to a hacker attack, during which confidential information was stolen. Now the attackers are demanding a ransom in the amount of tens of millions of dollars.

Yesterday it became known that the services of Kia Motors America had a failure throughout the country, which affected the UVO Link mobile application, telephone services, payment systems, the company portal and internal sites used by dealerships. The company said it is aware of the disruptions and Kia Motors America apologizes for any inconvenience and is working to resolve the issue and restore normal business operations.

BleepingComputer posted a ransom note that was left behind during a cyberattack by the DoppelPaymer ransomware gang. The note said hackers attacked Hyundai Motor America, Kia’s parent company, but Hyundai itself was not harmed.

The hackers talk about the theft of “a huge amount” of data from Kia Motors America, which will be published in 3 weeks if the company does not negotiate with the attackers. The stolen data is encrypted by the attackers. To prevent data leakage and obtain a decryptor, DoppelPaymer requires 404 bitcoins worth about $ 20 million. If the ransom is not paid within a certain period of time, the amount will increase to 600 bitcoins or $ 30 million.

Stealing unencrypted files has become a widely used ransomware tactic. Emsisoft says more than 1,300 companies worldwide are affected.
