Volvo introduced the long-awaited flagship crossover EX90 – a kind of substitute for the well-known gasoline XC90. The new model also got a completely new SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, which underlies the latest Polestar 3 crossover. The previously released pair of Volvo electric vehicles – the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge – are built on the old 5-year-old CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform, jointly developed with Geely.

The SPA2 features larger capacity traction batteries, more powerful motors, and support for faster charging and bi-directional charging. The EX90 will go on sale in 2023 – and immediately in a twin-engine all-wheel drive version with a capacity of 503 hp. with a traction battery with a capacity of 111 kWh and a power reserve of about 480 km. For such a car in the US, they will ask for a little less than $ 80,000.

Options for Europe – with 408 and 517 hp engines. and all the same traction battery. Prices (in the top-end Ultra configuration) are 105,550 and 110,650 euros, respectively. Production of the EX90 will start next year in the US, with plans to expand to China later.

The manufacturer emphasizes that the Volvo EX90 is made using recycled materials. So, it contains approximately 15% recycled steel and 25% recycled aluminum. And the mass of all parts made from recycled plastic and bio-based materials is 48 kg, which corresponds to approximately 15% of all plastic used in a car.

In the exterior of the Volvo EX90, features familiar to fans of the Swedish brand can be traced, but at the same time, the crossover is devoid of the traditional grille. Head T-shaped optics looks very interesting.

The interior of the crossover is made in the spirit of minimalism. The cabin is equipped with a digital instrument panel and a 14.5-inch display in a vertical orientation for multimedia control. Instead of physical buttons, touch keys are installed on the steering wheel.

The car uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit platform, which Volvo promises will deliver “lightning-fast performance and high-quality graphics on the built-in screens and head-up display.”

The software platform is Android Automotive with all the components in the form of the Google Assistant voice assistant, as well as Google Maps, the Play Store and other familiar Android components. iPhone users are not left out: Apple CarPlay is also supported. Finally, it is noted that the EX90 is the manufacturer’s first car with graphics based on the Unreal Engine.

Another feature of the Volvo EX90 is a roof-mounted LiDAR scanner, which, together with other sensors, provides the crossover with a high level of safety. Compared to the Volvo XC90, the new model is able to reduce the risk of serious accidents by 20%.

The Volvo EX90 has an automatic braking system, lane marking and blind spot monitoring, as well as electronics capable of recognizing the driver’s condition, determining the level of his fatigue. The Nvidia Drive platform is responsible for processing data from various sensors.
