The most impressive autopilot systems for cars today are Tesla and Waymo. Of course, if we are talking about those that are available to users in one form or another.

Given the lack of any standardized tests, it is very difficult to compare the capabilities of Tesla and Waymo autopilots. But one of the US residents decided to simply ride two cars of these companies in autopilot mode and compare the results as much as possible.

Tesla’s capabilities can be tested by those who have gained access to the Full Self-Driving Beta (FSD Beta) function, but to experience the delights of Waymo drones can generally only be in Arizona near the city of Phoenix. As a result, the author of the experiment simply called a taxi Waymo One, and then used his own Tesla Model 3 car with FSD function. For the purity of the experiment, the starting and ending points of the route were identical.

True, from the very beginning it became clear that the autopilot systems differ not only in the nature of driving and capabilities, but also in route selection algorithms: the cars simply went on different roads.

But we still managed to draw some conclusions. So Waymo took 8 minutes and Tesla took 5 minutes and 12 seconds. The reason is not the different speed of movement, but the distance. The Waymo car simply continued on a longer route. But the reason for this is already more interesting. It lies in the fact that Waymo cars try to avoid turning left at unregulated intersections, since such turns are theoretically more dangerous.

Generally speaking, both systems coped with the task perfectly, did not require human intervention and moved smoothly. True, all this happened at night, so there were almost no other cars on the roads.

Interestingly, the Polestar 6 is already being offered for booking. The manufacturer also notes that the estimated final price should be $ 200,000.
