Coinbase user lost $ 11.6 million in 10 minutes as a result of fraud

The attacker withdrew millions of dollars in cryptocurrency through a series of transactions between multiple wallets.

A federal judge in the United States signed an order to withdraw more than $ 600,000 in bitcoins from the Huobi Global cryptocurrency wallet after it was found that the money was part of the $ 11.6 million stolen from Coinbase, Business Insider writes.

As reported in a statement from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office in September, in April 2021, a Coinbase user (someone called GR) purchased 200 bitcoins, after which he saw a fake notice on the screen stating that his account had been blocked. The notification was allegedly from Coinbase, but in fact it was the first step in a fraudulent scheme, which eventually ended with the withdrawal of $ 11.6 million in cryptocurrency (206 bitcoins) from the account.

How the scammers found out about the transaction through Coinbase is unclear. It is also unclear where the fake notification was displayed, on the phone or PC.

According to the prosecutor’s office, upon receiving the notification, GR called the indicated telephone number. The call was answered by “unknown 1” and asked the victim to make changes to his account, in particular, to allow remote access to it.

After gaining access to the victim’s account, “unknown 1” raised the daily money transfer limit and tried to disable certain notifications and warnings. The attacker then pulled out millions of dollars in Bitcoin and XLM through a series of transactions between multiple wallets. About 10.2 bitcoins ended up in the wallet of one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, Huobi Global.

Law enforcement officials filed a notice of confiscation of the stolen cryptocurrency. Huobi Global has not yet commented on this fact.

In early October 2021, Judge Dolly M. Gee approved the request for the warrant. A notice has also been posted to other victims in case they also want to claim their money back.

“Huobi has agreed to freeze funds pending resolution of the forfeiture suit. No one has been arrested or charged yet, but the investigation is ongoing,” said Thom Mrozek, director of media relations for the Los Angeles Attorney’s Office.

As reported in October, between March and May of this year, Coinbase was hit by a large-scale attack. As a result of the incident, cryptocurrency was stolen from 6 thousand wallets.

The technical side of the attack is based on the Pointer Authentication function. It is used to check Pointer Authentication Codes (PACs), allowing only code-signed software to run. However, the PACMAN method allows you to select the necessary PAC values. In part, this technique is similar to Specter and Meltdown in Intel processors.

At the same time, Apple spokesman Scott Radcliffe said that the vulnerability does not pose an immediate threat to users and is not sufficient in itself to bypass operating system protections.

A few years ago, a vulnerability was already found in Arm processors that allows an attacker to gain unauthorized access to data.

The vulnerability was first discovered in the Motorola Moto G20 smartphone based on the Unisoc T700 SoC. But in the end it turned out that the same vulnerability occurs in other platforms, however, the source did not provide a list.

The Check Point specialists who discovered the vulnerability notified Unisoc back in May, and the company has already released a fix, so smartphone owners should not worry now if they update the software of their devices.

While the update is being developed, experts recommend that all Windows users and administrators take advantage of temporary workarounds. As a Microsoft workaround recommends disable the MSDT URL protocol.

The CVE-2022-30190 vulnerability itself is contained in the Microsoft Windows Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), but due to the implementation of this tool, a single malicious office document is enough to exploit the vulnerability.

The scheme could be like this. Attackers create a malicious office document and slip it to the victim, for example by sending an email with an attachment. The infected file contains a link to an HTML file that contains JavaScript code that executes malicious code on the command line via MSDT. As a result, attackers are able to install programs, view, modify or destroy data, as well as create new accounts – that is, do everything that the privileges of the user who opened the infected file allow.
