Clone Robotics unveils robotic arm with muscles and skin

Clone Robotics demonstrated its latest development – a robotic arm, which is designed to resemble a human as much as possible. This arm has muscles that are covered with synthetic leather. The muscles were developed by the Clone Robotics team and were based on the idea of ​​the inventor McKibbin, which was used in prostheses back in the 1950s. In fact, such muscles are mesh tubes, inside of which are balls filled with air. An external pneumatic or hydraulic pump inflates the ball, it expands, and as a result, the muscle contracts in the longitudinal direction.

But the creators of the robotic arm did not want to make the pump too bulky and were looking for a design that could simply be applied with an electric current and made it contract. So they filled the balloons with a liquid – acetaldehyde – and placed a heating element in them. When an electric current is applied to it, the liquid boils and the pressure inside the ball increases by more than 6 times. This allows the muscle to contract “impressively fast,” the developers note. The prototype arm is covered in translucent skin so that the movement of the muscles can be seen.

As for the “skeleton” of the hand, it consists of artificial “bones” resembling human ones, on articulated joints to provide a range of motion as close as possible to a human. The developers claim about 27 degrees of freedom: for example, the hand can naturally move the wrist, rotate the thumb, etc., all of which are driven by a complex combination of muscles and tendons. During the tests, the hand was even able to lift a dumbbell.

By the end of 2022, Clone Robotics plans to ship such robotic arms to customers. At the same time, the cost of the device has not yet been reported. With their next product, the company is going to make a full torso with a stiff spine that includes 124 muscles in the neck, shoulders, arms, chest and upper back. He will ride on a platform with a battery.

Intel is betting heavily on a new 3D packaging technology for Quasi-Monolithic Chips (QMC). The bottom line is that QMC aims to offer almost the same performance as interconnects used in monolithic chips. QMC is known to be a new sub-3 micron pitch hybrid interconnect technology that results in a 10x increase in power efficiency and performance density compared to Intel designs presented at last year’s IEDM. The 10 micron step approach was described last year, and even that was already a 10x improvement over current technologies. That is, Intel, at least on paper, was able to achieve a 100-fold improvement in energy efficiency and density in just a few years. In addition, QMC also allows multiple chips to be stacked vertically on top of each other.
