In 2020, laptop shipments were driven by the education sector, with significant growth driven by the need for online learning and work from home, according to a DigiTimes report. In the total supply of laptops, Chromebooks accounted for more than 60%.

Among the major Chromebook brands, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Samsung Electronics and Asustek Computer hit new quarterly records in the first quarter. Shipments of models powered by MediaTek solutions exceeded 1.5 million units in the quarter. The latest Digitimes Research data from Notebook Tracker shows global laptop shipments reached 57.51 million units in the first quarter of 2021, down 8.7% from a year earlier.

First-quarter shipments were provided primarily by gaming and education laptops, as well as Apple’s MacBooks. Asustek and Micro-Star International (MSI) have also increased shipments of gaming laptops.

According to Digitimes Research, Apple shipped more than five million MacBooks in the first quarter of 2021, up 150% from a year earlier, while Apple M1-based models accounted for more than 50% of volumes.
