Chinese probe sent new photos of Mars “in profile”

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has released two new photographs of Mars sent by the Tianwen 1 automatic interplanetary station.

As the source notes, the pictures were taken from the side and they capture the southern and northern hemispheres of the Red Planet. In the images, Mars has a crescent shape with a clearly visible surface.

The image of the southern hemisphere was captured by a medium-resolution camera on Tianwen 1 on March 16, 2021 Beijing time. At this time, the orbital altitude of the vehicle was about 11,200 kilometers.

The image of the northern hemisphere was also taken with a medium-resolution camera, but two days later – on March 18, 2021 Beijing time. At this time, the orbital altitude of the vehicle was about 11,500 kilometers.

The Tianwen 1 station was launched on July 23, 2020 using the Changzheng 5 heavy launch vehicle. It reached the elliptical orbit of Mars on February 10, 2021.
