China overtook the United States to become the richest country on Earth
According to Bloomberg, citing a recent study by McKinsey & Co, China is currently the richest country in the world.
Global wealth has tripled over the past 20 years, with China leading the way and surpassing the United States to become the world’s # 1 richest country. The study analyzed the national balance sheets of ten countries, which accounted for 60% of world income.
Global net worth increased to $ 514 trillion in 2020 from $ 156 trillion in 2000. “We are richer now than we have ever been,” said Jan Mischke, who works at McKinsey Global Institute in Zurich. China accounted for almost a third of the increase. The country’s capital rose to $ 120 trillion from $ 7 trillion in 2000, a year before joining the World Trade Organization, accelerating the economic recovery. The US, although it has doubled its net worth, has only $ 90 trillion. Thus, the US yields to China $ 30 trillion.
In both China and the United States, over 67% of wealth belongs to the richest 10% of households. McKinsey estimates that 68% of the world’s net worth is held in real estate, infrastructure, machinery and equipment and, to a much lesser extent, in so-called intangibles such as intellectual property and patents.
The report also warns that despite such numbers, China’s economy is at risk of being overwhelmed by property debt. One way to avoid this crisis, not only in China but around the world, is to secure productive investment that contributes to global GDP.
Otherwise, if asset prices plummet, up to 33% of the world’s wealth could be destroyed.
