Car manufacturer Rivian is in full swing developing an electric bike

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed at a staff meeting that electric bike development is well under way. According to Bloomberg, Scaringe announced this last Friday, February 3.

R. J. Scaringe had previously expressed an interest in electric bicycles. The company has applied to expand its brand name to cover electric bikes.

The company has also poached some high-profile electric bike designers from big brands like Specialized by building up a development team.

The move comes at a difficult time for Rivian, which has recently faced a wave of layoffs. Rivian recently announced that the company will be laying off 6% of its workforce due to cost-cutting problems due to increased production.

Rivian has been successful in ramping up production of its R1T and R1S electric vehicles over the past year, although the company has so far failed to cut its costs.

As Electrek writes, electric bikes are very cost-effective because they are much easier to design and manufacture. E-bikes also have much lower regulatory barriers, further reducing costs and shortening the development period.

Volkswagen is phasing out the highly popular Volkswagen Passat sedan in Europe. A car in such a body will no longer be produced and sold in Europe.

The company has clarified that the next-generation Volkswagen Passat model (pictured), which will debut in the coming weeks or months, will be sold exclusively as a station wagon. Company chief Thomas Schäfer told Automotive News Europe that the decision to ditch the good old sedan was made despite the fact that it was the best-selling car in its segment in Europe last year. In the United States, the Passat has been discontinued after the 2022 model year.

The head of Volkswagen said that deliveries of the new Volkswagen Passat 2024 station wagon should begin in September, which means that the official announcement will take place this summer or even earlier. The midsize car will no longer be built in Emden (Germany) as production is moved to Bratislava (Slovakia). At the same time, it is worth noting that the production of the previous generation sedan ended in January 2022, as we reported.

The assembly of the sister model Skoda Superb will be moved from Kvasin (Czech Republic) to the same plant in Bratislava. The next Superb will be offered in both liftback and wagon body styles.
