Canon announces refreshed EOS M50 Mark II mirrorless camera with minor improvements

by Henry Brown

Canon has released the new EOS M50 Mark II mirrorless digital camera. This device is a slightly modified version of the original EOS M50 released two years ago.

Among the main innovations and improvements, two aspects can be distinguished. The new Canon EOS M50 Mark II supports the optional automatic focusing function on the model’s eyes. It is available when shooting both photos and videos. This allows the Dual Pixel Auto Focus System to track subjects in the frame more accurately and lock focus than the previous device.

The second innovation was the ability to record vertical videos. This capability can be sought after by today’s audience that prefers to record vertical video for social networks like Instagram, Snapchat or TikTok, but are not thrilled with the video quality that smartphone cameras provide. Users can now more easily create high-quality social media videos for themselves or clients, and they can upload such videos with minimal effort.

Other changes are less significant. The new camera has a video recording button and a self-timer for video. Users can also use the autofocus screen while looking through the electronic viewfinder. A webcam mode has been added for using the camera with Canon’s EOS Webcam Utility software or direct connection via HDMI. Finally, the camera supports live streaming to YouTube.

Other technical specifications of the Canon EOS M50 Mark II camera have not changed significantly compared to its predecessor. The novelty received the same 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor. Video recording capabilities look already limited by 2020 standards. The devices can record video in 4K resolution, but only at 24 frames per second, only with contrast autofocus and with a crop factor of 1.5. If you want to use the Dual Pixel autofocus system and higher frame rates, you’ll have to settle for 1080p resolution.

The new Canon EOS M50 Mark II digital mirrorless camera will go on sale for a suggested retail price of $ 600. For a kit with an EF-M 15-45mm f3.5-6.3 interchangeable lens, you will need to pay $ 700.
