Qualcomm is working on a next-generation single-chip system for Windows PCs. Now the platform appears under the code name Hamoa, and new data has appeared about it.

Can Qualcomm repeat the Apple revolution? The company is already testing SoC Hamoa on the developments of Nuvia

The WinFuture resource confirms recent reports that SoC Hamoa will receive a processor with 12 cores. More precisely, we are talking about eight large and four small nuclei. Qualcomm is already testing the new SoC in two versions with catalog numbers SC8380X and SC8380XP. The current Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 SoC is numbered SC8280, which means the new platform could be named Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, although it doesn’t have to be.

Qualcomm is testing a new SoC paired with LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4.0 and a Snapdragon X65 5G modem. At the same time, it is not clear whether the modem will be part of a single-chip system or whether it will be made as a separate chip. Considering that the modem is designed for the 4 nm manufacturing process, it is assumed that Hamoa will be manufactured according to the same standards.

There are no other new data yet. Recall that it was previously said that a distinctive feature of the new platform, which is being created on the Nuvia Phoenix architecture, will be support for discrete graphics cards, which will allow creating gaming PCs based on Hamoa. True, for now one can only guess how Hamoa will behave in games for Windows. Recently, Qualcomm also introduced the Oryon processor core, which will be the basis of Hamoa.

How successful Qualcomm’s new attempt to bring the Windows PC market to Arm will be is hard to say. The Always-Connected PC segment itself has existed for several years, during which time Qualcomm has released several generations of specialized platforms, but such devices still remain niche, and the market is as small as possible. However, Apple’s example showed that such platforms can be no worse than full-fledged x86-compatible processors.
