“Black code” – experts found two critical vulnerabilities in Intel processors

As Izvestia reports, citing Positive Technologies specialists Mark Ermolov and Dmitry Sklyarov, two undocumented instructions were found in Intel processors that allow you to modify the microcode and take control of the processor.

Such capabilities are present, in particular, in Intel’s Atom processor line, which has been updated for more than ten years. Indirect indications indicate that these instructions are supported by all modern Intel processors.

In theory, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability by gaining a range of control over a compromised system, ranging from a simple remote shutdown to flashing the processor with microcode that performs the necessary tasks.

These instructions can be activated remotely in a special mode of operation of the Red Unlock processors, to which only Intel engineers should have access. However, some processors have vulnerabilities that allow third parties to enable Red Unlock mode.

Intel representatives have already stated that they are very serious about the results of this study and are studying the issue.

It is assumed that the Radeon RX 7900 XT will be built on the Navi 31 GPU, consisting of one GCD module (the equivalent of CCD in Ryzen processors) with 12,288 stream processors and six MCD modules – each with 16 MB of third-level cache (Infinity Cache) and 64 -bit memory controller. In total, this gives 96 MB of cache memory and a 384-bit bus, but the use of bulk packaging technology will allow each MCD to place another cache chip, as a result, the total volume of Infinity Cahce will be 192 MB.

This is the full Navi 31 configuration, but there will also be a stripped-down version – with 10,752 stream processors and five MCDs – with 160 MB of Infinity Cache and a 320-bit bus. Such a GPU could form the basis of the Radeon RX 7800 XT.

Navi 32 is another contender for the Radeon RX 7800 XT (or more likely the Radeon RX 7800). It predicts the presence of 7680 stream processors, a 256-bit bus and 64 MB of Infinity Cache (there will be no additional cache memory chips). Finally, the Radeon RX 7700 XT can get a monolithic Navi 33 GPU with 4096 stream processors and 32 MB Infinity Cahce and a 128-bit bus.

Intel is still keeping the intrigue and does not name the exact prices for its Arc A770 and Arc A750 video cards. However, it seems that the chipmaker himself hinted at their cost.

As noted, participants in the Xe HPG Scavenger Hunt contest can choose the Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K processors as a prize – this is offered as an alternative to the Arc A770 and Arc A750, respectively. Thus, knowing the recommended prices for chips, you can roughly calculate the prices of video cards.

This suggests that the price of the top-end Arc A770 will not exceed $410, and the Arc A750 – $290. Of course, this is just an estimated cost.

Note that the letters received by the participants of the event say that the cards will debut soon, but it will not be specified whether this will happen in the summer. Perhaps they will appear in the fall.

In terms of specifications, the A770 will be based on the ACM-G10 GPU with 4096 cores clocked at up to 2.5GHz. She is promised 16 GB of GDDR6 video memory with an effective frequency of 15.5 GHz, as well as a 256-bit bus.

The Arc A750 version will get the same chip but with 3584 cores. Also, the card will have 8 GB of GDDR6 memory with a frequency of 15.5 GHz and a 256-bit bus.

Nvidia’s flagship GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card has dropped to almost $1,000 in the US, but AMD’s top-end graphics cards are also dropping in price, with the Radeon RX 6900 XT hitting a low this week, dropping to $700. Not so long ago, the Radeon RX 6700 XT was sold for that kind of money.

Formally, the Radeon RX 6900 XT is not the top model in the AMD line, as there is the Radeon RX 6950 XT. But the difference between them is quite small. With its 16GB of GDDR6 memory, 256-bit bus, 5120 stream processors, the Radeon RX 6900 XT will be relevant for a long time to come.

Interestingly, the new price low of the Radeon RX 6900 XT was recorded against the backdrop of an increase in the cost of Ethereum. It can be assumed that by introducing new discounts, sellers are starting to clear out warehouses before the release of the Radeon RX 7000 line of video cards.
