Modern PCs and smartphones have long become universal devices that allow a lot. But AstroHous seems to think that dedicated systems are better. The developers have introduced a portable device called Freewrite Alpha, which is designed for writers. This is a kind of modern “reissue” of electric typewriters and word processors.

The novelty is equipped with a monochrome LCD display measuring 6.5 by 1 inch, which is enough to display from 2 to 6 lines of text at a time, depending on the font size. Alpha also has a full-size mechanical keyboard on Kailh Choc V2 switches, a USB-C port for charging a 4200 mAh battery, an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter, and some modern features, including basic text editing, cloud sync and autosave.

Note that Freewrite also has more advanced models with E ink screens, but the price is higher. The Alpha is available for pre-order for $249 and will retail for $349 in Summer 2023.

The main advantage of the device can be considered its instantaneous activation, which is sometimes important for writers. There’s also support for Freewrit mail and third-party services, including Dropbox, Google Drive, and Evernote.

The design of the Freewrite Alpha is inspired by classic devices from the 1980s and 1990s such as the AlphaSmart, Cambridge Z88, and TRS-80 Model 100. AstroHous plans to only sell English layout versions at this time, but other language options may be added if there is demand. .

The Intel Z790 chipset has improved the overclocking function, it also supports DDR5 and PCIe5 RAM. DDR5 delivers 50% higher throughput than DDR4, while PCIe 5.0 increases TPS from 16 GT/s (with PCIe 4.0) to 32 GT/s.
