PC OEMs such as Acer, Asus and MSI are facing overstocking due to low consumer demand, China Times reports. PC and laptop ODM manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Apple face similar problems.
The two companies hardest hit by the inventory overload are Asus and Quanta. Asus has accumulated inventories worth the equivalent of $6.8 billion. This is almost 60% more than inventory levels at the same time last year. Quanta has about $8.4 billion in inventories, up nearly 55% from last year. Along with Compal, Inventec and Wistron inventory, there is approximately $32.30 billion worth of goods released in the second quarter of this year in warehouses.
The China Times post provides more in-depth insider information on Asus’ inventory composition and the company’s take on the situation. From the looks of it, about half of Asus’ inventory is finished products, while the other half is components and integrated circuits.
It is reported that some Asus products and components must be sold in the coming quarters, otherwise they will become obsolete and lose a lot of value. Asus estimates that it can use about 80-90% of its available chips and components to manufacture next-generation products and PCs. However, Asus has set a goal of clearing a quarter of its existing inventory by the end of the year.
Aggressive inventory cleanup targets can be helpful for end users looking to get a deal. China Times sources believe that most PC brands will “aggressively promote finished products through sales channels through discounts and promotions.” As a result, PC and component manufacturers will simply have to sacrifice some of their profits in order to get rid of retail and warehouse stock. How companies achieve this could significantly impact their financial performance for the third and fourth quarters of 2022.
A strange gaming laptop without a discrete graphics card and not at all with Windows. Lenovo is preparing the release of the IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook
Lenovo is preparing a gaming laptop of the IdeaPad Gaming line, which, firstly, does not work under Windows, and secondly, does not have a discrete graphics card.
The full name of the novelty is the IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook, and here it is already clear that Chrome OS acts as the OS. But the operating system here is just one of the oddities of this gaming laptop. The second, as already mentioned, is the lack of a discrete graphics card. What’s more, it’s not just some Ryzen 7 6800U, whose iGPU is so powerful that such a laptop could hardly be called a gaming laptop. Instead, Intel processors serve as the heart here: Core i3-1215U or Core i5-1235U. Recall that their graphics cores are very modest in their capabilities, so you don’t even have to think about some modern demanding games. Moreover, the laptop also has a screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, which creates an additional load on the GPU.
As a result, it is completely unclear why the laptop is gaming, but here even the design is the same as in other Lenovo gaming models.
As for the rest of the parameters, the novelty is equipped with a 120-Hz IPS screen with a diagonal of 16 inches, a 512 GB SSD, 8 GB of RAM, a pair of USB-C ports, a pair of USB-A, microSD, Wi-Fi 6 and an aluminum cover.
Price data is not yet available.
The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED, the world’s first 17.3-inch foldable laptop, goes on sale
Asus announced the start of sales of its flagship Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702) laptop with a flexible 17.3-inch OLED display, which was announced at the beginning of the year at CES 2022.
The laptop received a flexible display with an aspect ratio of 4: 3 with a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. It can be folded in half to give two 1920 x 1280 pixel displays with a 3:2 aspect ratio. There is no bezel between the screens. The screen is Dolby Vision certified and reproduces 100% of the DCI-P3 range.
The hinge provides an opening angle of up to 180 degrees, while it can withstand 30,000 opening and closing cycles. If you open and close it 10 times a day, it should last about 8 years.
Inside is a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1250U processor with Intel Iris Xe graphics, 16GB LPDDR5-5200 RAM, and a 1TB PCIe SSD. The battery has a capacity of 75 Wh and comes with a 65 W charger.
The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED is only about 8.7mm thick when unfolded (17.4mm when folded). The weight of this laptop is only about 1.5 kg, and the diagonal is about 12.5 inches. Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED received an array of four microphones and two cameras.
The kit comes with a Bluetooth version of the ErgoSense keyboard with a built-in touchpad and the ability to connect to two devices at once.
In China, the price is $2,800.
Bloomberg: Apple will cancel the October presentation of the new iPad and MacBook Pro
According to the latest news from well-known insider Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple will not be hosting the October event this year. Instead, the company will simply start selling new devices.
Recall that usually after the September presentation of new iPhones and smart watches, the company also holds a press conference in October, at which it introduces the new iPad and MacBook Pro.
Two new tablets are expected to debut this year, namely the iPad 10 and iPad Pro 2022. The affordable iPad 10 may keep the Home button, but the bezel will be smaller. Inside, the Apple A14 single-chip system is expected, and the interface will be replaced with USB-C.
The iPad Pro 2022 will get Apple’s latest M2 platform, MagSafe magnetic wireless charging, but the 11-inch version will still not use the Mini LED display.
New 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M2 Pro/Max processors are also expected.
