Citing representatives of the US government, the source claims that President Joe Biden’s strategy to turn the United States into a powerful player in the global electric vehicle market will include measures to develop internal battery recycling to recycle lithium and other metals.
Biden is making the fight against climate change and the rivalry with China at the center of his agenda. As a result, the presidential administration is set to complete a 100-day study of supply chain gaps in key areas, including electric vehicles, later this week.
Reports from various government agencies will be submitted to the White House in the course of the program, which Biden ordered earlier this year. Some reports may be published as early as next week.
Among the gaps mentioned are the supply of metals used in batteries for electric vehicles and consumer electronics. Earlier, Reuters reported that the United States plans to rely on mines in allied countries to supply most of the metals needed to make electric vehicles. In addition to choosing reliable sources, the administration is proposing to reduce the use of metal in batteries.
Action options to promote waste management being considered by the administration include direct investment in related projects and research. Recycling older electric vehicles in the United States is expected to help reduce dependence on mining and supply of minerals.
