Beware: malware spreads on Google Play under the guise of Minecraft mods

Kaspersky Lab experts have warned mobile gaming enthusiasts about a new danger. He found that malicious applications disguised as Minecraft mods began to spread again on Google Play.

According to experts, at the end of 2020, more than 20 such applications were already removed from Google Play, but now new versions of malware have appeared.

Previously, apps turned the device into a highly intrusive ad serving tool. Now, such applications can, at the command of cybercriminals, launch full-screen ads on an ongoing basis, load an add-on to hide the application icon, suddenly open a browser, show YouTube videos, and open application pages on Google Play.

The experts also discovered apps that steal Facebook accounts – something a fake ad network and a fake TikTok ad client can do. They require you to enter your Facebook credentials, after which the information goes to the attackers.

Also found was the malicious application File Recovery – Recover Deleted Files, posing as a utility for recovering deleted files. By now, the developers have removed it, and the version that is available on Google Play now is safe.

Kaspersky Lab specialists have already notified Google about the found applications with malicious “stuffing”.
