Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the global market for radio frequency processors or baseband processors – the key chips that power electronic devices on cellular networks – has grown strongly in the past year. Growth was at an all-time high, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics. Having increased by 25% compared to 2019, the market reached $ 26.8 billion.

Analysts point out that the growth is largely driven by an increase in shipments of 5G-enabled models. Suffice it to say that, compared to 2019, revenue in this segment has grown more than eight times.

The leader is Qualcomm. In 2020, she alone occupied 43% of the market. Qualcomm is followed by HiSilicon and MediaTek, each with 18% shares. The top five also include Samsung LSI and Intel. Analysts expect a new entrant to the competition in the coming years – Apple, which recently acquired a related division from Intel.

Altair Semiconductor (owned by Sony since 2016), Nordic Semiconductor and Sequans in the IoT niche also saw significant sales growth in 2020.

The CPU was tested in Cinebench R23, and the catch is that this software recognizes a maximum of 256 threads. Two 96-core processors have 384 threads thanks to SMT support. That is, the result obtained in the benchmark reflects only two thirds of the capabilities of the tested pair of CPUs.

Despite this, the processors scored over 110,000 points in multi-threaded mode. In a single thread, the result was 1302 points.

For comparison, one 64-core Threadripper 5995WX gains about the same amount (even a little more), but overclocked to 5.15 GHz using liquid nitrogen. The comparison with the direct competitor Xeon Platinum 8480+ is more interesting. A system with two of these 56-core processors scores only about 68,500 points. True, the source says that there were problems in the operation of these CPUs, so serial processors may show slightly better results. However, in any case, the gap is huge, because even two current-generation 64-core Epyc 7763 score 98,000 points. As a result, it is not yet clear whether the new Intel server processors will be able to somehow withstand the monsters of AMD. In addition, judging by the latest data, Sapphire Rapids-SP will eventually be delayed even more and will not be released until next year.

Another experiment was set up on an engineering sample of the Core i9-13900KF, whose high-performance cores were overclocked to a frequency of 6.2 GHz. The frequency of 5.2 GHz was also the most energy efficient.

In Cinebench R23, this CPU scored 42,790 in the multi-threaded test and 2263 in the single-threaded test – a very good result, especially considering that the tested CPU with lower frequencies – 5.8 GHz (high-performance cores) and 4.7 GHz (energy efficient) . With such overclocking, the Core i9-13900KF turned out to be noticeably faster than both the Core i9-12900K and even more so the Ryzen 9 5950X in a single-threaded test, and in a multi-threaded performance difference is about 50% in favor of the new Intel CPU.
