Astronomers fear that the James Webb Space Telescope will not be able to distinguish Earth from Venus

Astronomers have expressed concern that data from the James Webb space observatory on exoplanets will be misinterpreted. An article about this was published in Nature Astronomy.

Astronomers fear that the James Webb Space Telescope will not be able to distinguish Earth from Venus

Launched in 2021, the James Webb Infrared Telescope has become the most expensive and sophisticated orbital observatory in human history. It has the ability to determine the chemical composition of stars and planetary atmospheres using spectrometers, that is, by analyzing which part of the spectrum is absorbed by the observed substance. However, scientists, roughly speaking, can only fix the location of dark bands in the light decomposed by a prism, and the interpretation of these data is carried out using physical models.

Earth and Venus

Now MIT scientists have said those models may not be reliable enough. To find out, they created a set of artificial (simulated) spectra, supposedly taken from a telescope. They then tried to determine what chemical composition these spectra correspond to using existing models. It turned out that their accuracy is extremely limited, in particular, they do not always make it possible to distinguish the temperature of the atmosphere at 26 degrees from 326, and also to identify the difference between 5% or 25% of the content of a certain gas, in particular, water vapor. Thus, the line between the suitability of the planet for life and unsuitability becomes hardly noticeable, and in some cases it will not be possible to distinguish an Earth-like world from a Venus-like one.

In this regard, the authors of the work propose to conduct a series of laboratory experiments to clarify exactly how different substances and compounds absorb light in order to improve existing models.

What will the Pixel 7 and iPhone 14 have in

It seems that the new generation of Pixel smartphones will differ little from the current models. At a minimum, according to recent data, this will affect the younger Pixel 7 model.

What will the Pixel 7 and iPhone 14 have in common? New Google will be little different from its predecessor

According to insider Yogesh Brar, who at one time provided correct data about the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 will not receive any important differences from its predecessor. It will have the same 8 GB of RAM, the same 128 or 256 GB of flash memory, the same based camera with 50 and 12 MP sensors. The front camera will be new, but it’s an 11-megapixel sensor from the Pixel 6 Pro.

SoC Tensor G2 will also be new, but so far all data indicates that the processor part of this platform will be the same as that of the current Tensor, only with slightly increased frequencies. The screen will retain the resolution and frame rate of 90 Hz, but, unexpectedly, will become a little smaller: 6.3 inches versus 6.4 inches. Apparently, Google heard users and journalists who said that there is not much difference in size between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, and both feel large. True, it is not a fact that reducing the screen will lead to a decrease in size.

As for the battery, its capacity will allegedly be 4700 mAh, which is only slightly more than 4614 mAh for the Pixel 6.

As a result, the situation with the Pixel 7 will be similar to the iPhone 14, when there are very few differences from its predecessor, and there are no serious ones at all.

Google Photos service began to spoil old photos

Numerous complaints from users of Google Photos (Google Photos) have appeared on the network. In the past few days, users have started noticing “artifacts” in older image backups.

Google Photos service began to spoil old photos

The problem seems to affect photos uploaded more than five years ago. The photo shows lines, dots, “deep cracks” and what looks like water stains that weren’t on the original downloads.

Judging by the complaints in the support section of the service, old images can get a variety of damage. However, users report artifacts in Google Photos on all platforms.

Interestingly, some users note that opening corrupted photos in the Google Photos image editor removes “artifacts”. This suggests that the original versions may not be corrupted. But we will have to wait until Google releases an official statement on this matter.
