ASRock Unveils ASRock ROMED4ID-2T, Deep Mini-ITX Motherboard for AMD EPYC Rome 64-Core Processors

Small form factor desktop PCs with high performance processors have become quite common in recent years. But there is a demand for compact workstations and even servers. ASRock Rack quietly introduced one of the industry’s first motherboards for AMD EPYC 7002 “Rome” series processors in the so-called “Deep Mini-ITX” form factor. The platform will allow system manufacturers to create SFF systems with up to 64 cores.
ASRock ROMED4ID-2T has SP3 socket and supports AMD LGA4094 7002-series EPYC processors. The manufacturer does not disclose how much power the motherboard can give to the processor or the list of processors compatible with the device. But it’s unlikely that this particular platform is for high-end EPYC chips.
The motherboard has four DDR4 memory slots that support RDIMMs and LRDIMMs up to 256GB and therefore up to 1TB DRAM in total, at speeds up to 3200 MT / s. The platform also has one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot for graphics, one M.2-2280 slot (PCIe 4.0 x4 or SATA) for solid state drives, and six U.2 slots (PCIe 4.0 x8 or SATA). The platform’s internal I / O is good enough for both servers and workstations. In addition, it is also equipped with an ASPeed AST2500 Main Board Management Controller (BMC).
In terms of external I / O connectors, ASRock ROMED4ID-2T has two 10 GbE ports (managed by Intel X550-AT2), one GbE connector and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, which is enough for servers, but hardly enough. for most workstations.
The Deep Mini-ITX motherboard measures 6.7 x 8.2 inches (17 x 20.8 cm). Therefore, ASRock ROMED4ID-2T will not fit into typical Mini-ITX cases, but only those that have additional space inside (Deep Mini-ITX). The board will also fit into a larger desktop computer.
Traditionally ASRock Rack has been producing motherboards for various system integrators, so it is highly likely that ROMED4ID-2T was designed for a specific customer. Meanwhile, since it is listed on the company’s website, it will also be available to all interested parties. ASRock did not disclose pricing for the platform, but it is a unique product that will sell for an affordable price.
ASRock is renowned for making unique Mini-ITX motherboards. A few years ago, the company introduced one of the first Mini-ITX motherboards based on Intel X299 to the enthusiast. Over the years, ASRock’s server division finally developed a Deep Mini-ITX motherboard with an SP3 socket – though for AMD EPYC processors, not for the more mainstream Threadripper line.
