Qualcomm is indeed working on new single-chip systems for smartwatches. There hasn’t been an announcement yet, but the documents that were clearly prepared for the presentation, which reveal all the details, got on the Web.

So, Qualcomm will change the naming principle, so we are not waiting for Snapdragon Wear 5100 and 5100+, but Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and W5+ Gen 1. This hints that not Snapdragon W6, but Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 will be released sometime later, although this is inaccurate.

The platforms will be produced according to the 4 nm process technology, that is, they will be as modern as possible. At the moment, no one on the market offers such SoCs for smartwatches. As a result, the documents say that autonomy should increase by up to 50%, which means that typical smartwatch models with average use will be able to work on a single charge for about two days or even more.

Qualcomm does not indicate the differences between the two new platforms, and the parameters were disclosed only for W5 Plus Gen 1. This SoC will receive four Cortex-A53 cores, one Cortex-M55 auxiliary core at 250 MHz and a 1 GHz Adreno 701 GPU, as well as some block or 2.5D function that will be responsible for the dials in the Always-On Display mode.

What’s impressive is support for up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM. Whether anyone will release a watch with this amount of RAM is anyone’s guess. From the rest, we can note a cellular modem, Bluetooth 5.3, a dual image processor, speaker support, support for two 16 MP cameras, an NFC module, as well as support for Android, Wear OS and RTOS. The first manufacturers to release watches on the new SoCs will be Oppo and Mobvoi.

Shell Infrastructure Host can use processor resources in excess for various reasons. sihost.exe is a Windows 11 system process, it is involved in the display of the Start menu, taskbar and important graphical elements of the OS interface. For example, transparency effects are indispensable without it. The bug occurs spontaneously and even in freshly installed Windows 11. Users note that trivial copying of files can cause increased CPU usage by the sihost.exe process.

Microsoft is naturally aware of the problem. The company has already released a patch for the beta version of Windows 11 under the designation KB5016700. The company says that this minor update “fixes an issue that caused sihost.exe to use a lot of CPU in some cases.” But one thing is a beta version of Windows, and another thing is the final one. The patch that fixes the sihost.exe bug will reportedly be part of the big Windows 11 22H2 update, which is expected to be released in September or October.
