Apple wanted to remove free Amphetamine app from App Store for name and icon design

By information MacRumors, William Gustafson, freeware developer Amphetamine for Mac, received a notification from Apple in late December 2020 that this app violates regulations App Store and will be removed in January 2021 from the store.

A utility to prevent Mac computers from going into sleep mode was posted on the Apple platform in 2014, it was downloaded more than 400 thousand times, and representatives of the App Store had no previous complaints about Gustafson. The application has a high rating in the American Mac App Store. And Apple even wrote about Amphetamine in App Store history.

On December 29, 2020, an Apple representative suddenly sent a warning to the developer and explained that applications in the App Store are prohibited from encouraging the consumption of tobacco, e-cigarettes, drugs and alcohol, as well as promoting their sale. The App Store suggested that Gustafson change the name and icon of the application in order to remove links to the name of the prohibited substance and its physical form – the form of a tablet. Otherwise, the app will be removed from the App Store.

The developer tried several times to explain to Apple that his application is not associated with prohibited drugs and their advertising, and the name itself is only a metaphor, since the user’s Mac will not sleep after installing and configuring the application. He filed an appeal in the App Store. According to Gustafson, a change in the name of the application will affect its recognition, and it will be difficult for users who have used it before to update it. It will also be more difficult for new users to find a utility to install.

For publicity among developers and users of the situation with his application, Gustafson published an extended report on GitHub, in which he asks for help to save the application from rebranding. The author asked users retweet his problem, to react to his post on Reddit, subscribe the “Save Amphetamine. app” petition at change.org (555 signatures were received there).

In addition, Gustafson said that Apple itself is inconsistent with the established rules for developers. He gave an example that in the App Store there are several applications that really encourage or advertise prohibited things, and the company does not fight with them and does not require to rename them – these are Coca applications (analogue of Amphetamine), Weed Tycoon (simulator for the breeding of illegal substances), Drug Mafia and Narcos (strategies for the production and sale of illegal substances), iBeer (beer drinking simulator) with a rating of 17+, when in many US states you can drink alcohol from the age of 21.

The author of the application also contacted the media. For example, at Apple with a question about Amphetamine applied Verge journalists.

January 2, 2020 Gustafson reported on Twitter that Apple accepted his arguments on appeal and allowed the app’s original name and icon to continue to be used unchanged. The company will not remove the utility from the App Store. The developer thanked everyone who was able to take part in the support of his application during the New Year’s time and help him defend the freedom of expression.

Developers of applications for the App Store often face different reactions from the company to the existing software in the store, up to blocking updates for various reasons. In early November 2020, two developers of terminal emulators for iOS announced at once that Apple was going to remove their iSH and a-Shell mobile applications from the App Store, since these applications allow users to install Linux executable code, and according to the company’s rules, any possibility is prohibited manage packages or download any code from local or remote sources.

So far, the company has only released its smartphone in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, but not in the US or Canada.

The reason we didn’t launch in the US is because you need more tech support to support all carriers and their unique customizations they need to do on top of Android. We felt we weren’t ready before. We are currently in talks with some carriers in the US about a possible launch of a future product there.
