Apple suspended production of its Apple M2 series SoCs in early 2023 due to a sharp drop in global demand for MacBooks, according to The Elec, citing its own sources.

These single-chip systems are used in the new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models, as well as in the latest MacBook Air models. It is reported that the suspension lasted until February, after which the production of the M2 series chips resumed, but the production volume was half that of last year.

Apple’s revenue was down about 5% year-over-year in the first quarter, a sharper decline than analysts had expected as Apple struggled with iPhone shipments, as well as declining sales of Macs and wearables.

iPad revenue grew 30% due to the launch of new M2-based models, but Mac revenue fell noticeably as no new Macs were released in the final months of 2022. Mac revenue was $7.7 billion, up from $10.9 billion last year.

During the release of its Q1 2023 earnings report, CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that Apple is facing a difficult situation in the PC market. “The industry is shrinking,” Cook said. — We have a small share, but we have a competitive advantage with Apple Silicon, so we are strategically well positioned in the market. But I think that in the short term there will be little difficulties.

Artificial intelligence will create new business opportunities and lead to economic growth that will create new jobs, according to IBM chief executive Arvind Krishna.

Krishna said he believes the net effect of AI on employment will be “job creation” rather than job destruction, although it will replace humans in certain jobs.

On Sunday, IBM announced plans to invest $100 million in a joint research project with the University of Tokyo and the University of Chicago in an attempt to build a 100,000-qubit quantum supercomputer in 10 years.

“Japan has accumulated a lot of experience in the field of quantum computing, accumulated over decades,” said Krishna. — Physicists, engineers and materials scientists are working on different aspects. Many people may not realize how deep Japan is in these areas.”

He predicted that quantum computing technology would advance step by step as part of a collaborative project in the next decade, with commercial applications starting in three to five years: “This is the time when people will be solving some problems that are probably too expensive or impossible for conventional computers. To do this, we need between 4,000 and 10,000 qubits.”

In quantum computing, a qubit, or quantum bit, is the basic unit of information, just like a binary bit is in conventional computers.

Unfortunately, there are no specs yet, but at this price, this should be a flagship PC. By the way, according to the images, it may be difficult to estimate the dimensions of the case, but the novelty is definitely not a small one: 650 x 306 x 651 mm.
