Apple today released the stable version of its new Mac operating system, macOS 12 Monterey, which has been tested since the summer following the announcement in June at WWDC 2021.
MacOS 12 Monterey has a lot of innovations in its arsenal. FaceTime has support for spatial audio, the SharePlay function for sharing video and listening to music, two new microphone modes – in the “Voice isolation” mode, background noise is muffled and the voice sounds clearer, and in the “Wide spectrum” mode, the interlocutors can hear everything that Goes Around, Portrait mode, which makes the user stand out and blurs the background, and Grid mode, where call participants are displayed in cells of the same size.
The functions “Online Text” and “Visual Search” use the new capabilities of artificial intelligence to find information.
The Safari browser now has the ability to combine tabs into groups. Tab groups sync between Mac, iPhone and iPad. And on the Mac, Siri Shortcuts have become available to automate various actions, just like in iOS.
Also noteworthy is the Universal Control function. It allows you to easily switch between Mac and iPad using the same mouse and keyboard, without any additional setup. You can enter text using the keyboard on any device, drag and drop content between devices, draw on iPad with Apple Pencil, and then add artwork directly to apps on Mac, and more.
AirPlay broadcasts allow you to play, show or send content from iPhone or iPad to Mac – broadcast movies, games, photos and presentations, music.
The Focus feature lets you filter notifications from apps and people based on what the user is currently doing. Focus settings set on a Mac are automatically applied to all of the user’s devices in the Apple ecosystem. In Focus mode, Messages and other supported applications such as Slack automatically display the corresponding status. And that’s not all of the innovations in macOS 12 Monterey.
MacOS 12 Monterey is available as a free software update on Apple-based Macs and Intel-based Macs:
- iMac – Late 2015 and newer
- Mac Pro – Late 2013 and newer
- iMac Pro – 2017 and newer
- Mac mini – Late 2014 and newer
- MacBook Air – Early 2015 and newer
- MacBook – Early 2016 and newer
- MacBook Pro – Early 2015 and newer.
Note that SharePlay and Universal Control are not available at the time of release, to activate them Apple will release a separate macOS 12 Monterey update before the end of the fall.
48-core CPU, 160-core GPU and 384GB RAM. This could be the platform of the new Apple Mac Pro
Apple has already migrated almost all of its PCs to its own single-chip systems, but it remains an open question what the company will be able to offer for the new Mac Pro. The new data says it will be SoC M2 Extreme.
The Macwolrd resource does not have any fresh data on this, but our colleagues decided to guess what the new platform might turn out to be, based on how Apple created the M1 line of solutions.
In particular, since the M2 has eight CPU cores, ten GPU cores, and 24GB of memory, the M2 Pro can get 10 CPU cores, 20 GPU cores, and 48GB of memory.
M2 Max in this case will offer the same CPU, but already 40 GPU cores and 96 GB of memory.
The M2 Ultra will have 24 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, and 192GB of memory, while the M2 Extreme in Max Pro will have an incredible 48 CPU cores, 160 GPU cores, and 384GB of universal memory. What size such a platform will have and what performance it will provide is hard to even imagine.
True, there have already been rumors that the Mac Pro will receive a platform with a 40-core processor and a GPU with up to 128 cores, although this is impressive.
New Logitech Mice and Keyboards for iPhone and Mac Introduced, Including First Mechanical Keyboard
Logitech has announced a line of new mice and keyboards specifically designed to work with Mac computers. The list includes Logitech’s first mechanical keyboard optimized for Mac.
The $150 MX Mechanical Mini Keyboard for Mac has a Mac-designed layout with tools to customize keyboard shortcuts with Logi Options+. The keyboard features quiet, low-profile, backlit typing switches. It’s available in space gray or light gray and connects to up to three Apple devices using the Easy Switch feature.

Logitech has announced a $100 MX Master 3S mouse that allows you to scroll 1000 lines per second and also has an adjustable DPI level (from 1000 to 8000). The mouse received quiet buttons and can connect to three devices at the same time.
Another mouse – Lift for Mac – is designed to place the hand in a natural position at an angle of 57 degrees. Logitech says this design puts less pressure on your wrists while you work and keeps your hand in a more natural position.
The latest novelty costs $70.
Black and White LCD, Wi-Fi, and $249 Mechanical Keyboard Pre-Order: Unique Writing Computer Introduced
Modern PCs and smartphones have long become universal devices that allow a lot. But AstroHous seems to think that dedicated systems are better. The developers have introduced a portable device called Freewrite Alpha, which is designed for writers. This is a kind of modern “reissue” of electric typewriters and word processors.
The novelty is equipped with a monochrome LCD display measuring 6.5 by 1 inch, which is enough to display from 2 to 6 lines of text at a time, depending on the font size. Alpha also has a full-size mechanical keyboard on Kailh Choc V2 switches, a USB-C port for charging a 4200 mAh battery, an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter, and some modern features, including basic text editing, cloud sync and autosave.
Note that Freewrite also has more advanced models with E ink screens, but the price is higher. The Alpha is available for pre-order for $249 and will retail for $349 in Summer 2023.
The main advantage of the device can be considered its instantaneous activation, which is sometimes important for writers. There’s also support for Freewrit mail and third-party services, including Dropbox, Google Drive, and Evernote.
The design of the Freewrite Alpha is inspired by classic devices from the 1980s and 1990s such as the AlphaSmart, Cambridge Z88, and TRS-80 Model 100. AstroHous plans to only sell English layout versions at this time, but other language options may be added if there is demand. .
