Apple today released the stable version of its new Mac operating system, macOS 12 Monterey, which has been tested since the summer following the announcement in June at WWDC 2021.

MacOS 12 Monterey has a lot of innovations in its arsenal. FaceTime has support for spatial audio, the SharePlay function for sharing video and listening to music, two new microphone modes – in the “Voice isolation” mode, background noise is muffled and the voice sounds clearer, and in the “Wide spectrum” mode, the interlocutors can hear everything that Goes Around, Portrait mode, which makes the user stand out and blurs the background, and Grid mode, where call participants are displayed in cells of the same size.

Also noteworthy is the Universal Control function. It allows you to easily switch between Mac and iPad using the same mouse and keyboard, without any additional setup. You can enter text using the keyboard on any device, drag and drop content between devices, draw on iPad with Apple Pencil, and then add artwork directly to apps on Mac, and more.

The Focus feature lets you filter notifications from apps and people based on what the user is currently doing. Focus settings set on a Mac are automatically applied to all of the user’s devices in the Apple ecosystem. In Focus mode, Messages and other supported applications such as Slack automatically display the corresponding status. And that’s not all of the innovations in macOS 12 Monterey.

MacOS 12 Monterey is available as a free software update on Apple-based Macs and Intel-based Macs:

  • iMac – Late 2015 and newer
  • Mac Pro – Late 2013 and newer
  • iMac Pro – 2017 and newer
  • Mac mini – Late 2014 and newer
  • MacBook Air – Early 2015 and newer
  • MacBook – Early 2016 and newer
  • MacBook Pro – Early 2015 and newer.

Note that SharePlay and Universal Control are not available at the time of release, to activate them Apple will release a separate macOS 12 Monterey update before the end of the fall.

Computer in “credit card” format. Qualcomm develops Qompute Card concept despite Intel’s failure

Published

on

Qualcomm is reportedly developing a concept called the Qompute Card.

It involves placing all the basic elements of a PC on one small board. This will allow you to easily and quickly update the configuration of such a PC or use such cards by one user in different places on different PCs. Also, a similar solution can find application in household appliances.

The concept is not new at all. Back in 2017, a similar idea for the Intel Compute Card was presented, but the company abandoned it two years later, since it did not receive any distribution in the market.

Qualcomm as a whole makes a very similar decision, except that the heart of such cards will be SoCs based on the Arm architecture. The Qompute Card will also contain the motherboard, RAM and flash memory. That is, all the main elements of the finished device. At the same time, Qualcomm cards may well be significantly smaller than Intel Compute Card, if only because of the different power consumption of SoC Snapdragon and conventional Intel CPUs.

Qompute Card are aimed specifically at computers and laptops. At least the SoC Snapdragon 7c + Gen 3 presented the other day will also be offered as part of the cards. The source adds that Qualcomm is testing configurations for both Windows Arm and Chrome OS. How successful this version will turn out to be, time will tell. So far, all such modularity initiatives have not met with success.

Nvidia, HP and Zotac Ask US Administration to Remove Duties on Computer Components to Make Graphics Cards and Motherboards More Affordable to Consumers

Published

The industry of components for PCs, laptops, household appliances, cars has been living in a deficit for more than a year, and, naturally, this negatively affects the price: everything has risen in price, especially video cards. At Nvidia, one of the ways to reduce the cost of 3D cards, at least in the United States, sees the abolition of duties on computer components manufactured in China. In this, Nvidia was supported by Zotac and HP. The companies have made a joint inquiry to the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), which is deciding whether it is possible to exclude a particular product made in China from the Trump Tariff List.

In its statement, Nvidia focuses on the fact that video cards are mostly made only in China. “Products are not manufactured in the USA and in limited quantities in Taiwan“- said Nvidia. “Attempts to create new facilities in countries that do not currently manufacture such products (such as the United States and Vietnam) have failed and have been severely thwarted by the effects of COVID-19.“.

The Trump Tariff List, which took effect in January this year, includes a variety of Chinese-made computer components, including video cards and motherboards. And all of them in the United States are subject to a duty of 25%. As a result, many manufacturers, including Asus, EVGA, and Zotac, have yet another reason to increase the price of their products – in addition to the general scarcity of components in the industry.
